The ‘Hoofdgebouw’ is currently being renovated after its closure in January 2015. One thing is already clear: it will be cozy! The new residents of Atlas will be the faculty of Industrial Engineering & Innovation Sciences, the faculty of Industrial Design, the Executive Board (College van Bestuur) and other TU/e facilities. Unfortunately, Atlas has less space than all our current accommodations combined. Due to the moving of the faculties, the corresponding study associations, Lucid, Industria and Intermate will also get a new accommodation in Atlas. These three study associations will each receive their own rooms and bar, which will be explained later in this update.
Atlas consists around a few elementary principles. Light and openness are two of the key characteristics of the building. This implies that you will see a lot of glass and natural sunlight throughout the building. Also, every odd and even floor level is half-connected with each other, which reminds us of the library of the MetaForum.
Another key aspect of Atlas is the red stairway. This is the stairway that starts from the ground level and continues all the way up to the roof. The area around this stairway is designed as a meeting place for employees and students to have a nice chat and drink some coffee. The further you move into the building and away from these stairs, the more quiet the area becomes. Also, the more you move to the outside of the building, the more workplaces designed for concentration you will find. The staff’s workplaces will be located entirely on the outside of the building.
